GearGopher vs LighterPack: an honest comparison

LighterPack has been the default backpacking gear-list tool since 2012, and for good reason: it's free, it needs no account, and it does one job without asking you to learn a product. If it's working for you, there is no reason to switch.

This page is for when you want more than a spreadsheet: a packing-day checklist you can tick off, other hikers' lists to browse for ideas, or a second opinion on what you're missing before you leave the trailhead.

The short version

• Both let you reuse gear across lists. LighterPack supports this too — once an item exists, you can pull it into another list rather than retyping it. GearGopher's garage goes further: a dedicated inventory screen with categories, notes, and matching against a real gear taxonomy, and reviews that find items in your garage you might want to include in a particular trip.
• GearGopher adds a way to automatically select items from your gear for a particular trip based on the trip's details, suggest missing or duplicate items, and a packing-day checklist mode. — none of which LighterPack does.
• Neither one makes you sign up to start. You can build a trip list on GearGopher without an account and claim it later — signing up keeps what you already built.
• Both are free. GearGopher has no paid tier and gates nothing — unlimited trips and gear, CSV or LighterPack-link import, CSV export, and public sharing all included.

Feature comparison

Where LighterPack still wins

One thing, and it isn't small:

• It's the community standard. A LighterPack URL is understood in every gear thread on the internet. That's fourteen years of shared vocabulary and it isn't something a feature table changes.

Two things used to be on this list and no longer are. Data portability was one — LighterPack exported CSV and we didn't. That's fixed: you can export your garage or any trip to CSV at any time, free, and the file imports straight back in.

Needing an account was the other. You can now start a trip list on GearGopher without signing up — open the new-trip form, name it, and start adding gear. One honest caveat: until you create an account, that list lives in the browser you made it in, so clearing your cookies or moving to your phone loses it. Signing up afterwards keeps everything you've already built — same list, nothing to re-enter — and makes it reachable from anywhere.

Simplicity is genuinely LighterPack's product, not a limitation. If what you want is a weight column that adds up and items you can pull into a new list, the honest recommendation is to keep using it — it already does that.

The gear garage, in practice

LighterPack lets you reuse an item once it exists, so this isn't a from-scratch-every-time problem either way. The difference is what the reused item actually is. In GearGopher, the garage is a first-class screen: every item has a category, an optional note, a cost, and gets matched against a normalized taxonomy — name the items as you like and Gear-Gopher will do its best to determine if you are missing stove fuel or packing too many shirts. Gear-Gopher will estimate the weight for an initial look on your pack's weight before we give each item its actual weight.

If all you need is to avoid retyping items, LighterPack already covers that. The garage is for people who want gear management to be more than autocomplete.

Pack review

Gear-list tools are, almost universally, arithmetic. They tell you what your pack weighs. They don't tell you that you have no rain layer for a trip you've tagged as shoulder season in a temperate rainforest, or that you're carrying two knives.

GearGopher's pack review reads the list and flags what looks missing or redundant for the trip you've described. It's a second opinion, not an oracle — you're still the one who knows the terrain. LighterPack doesn't try to do this at all; it's a spreadsheet with a weight column, and a good one.

A few newer tools do offer AI suggestions, and some of them are good. The difference worth knowing about is where the suggestions come from. Ours aren't a language model's opinion of your list: the specific items flagged are decided by rules checked against a gear catalogue we curate by hand, and the model only writes the summary paragraph — it isn't allowed to add, remove or invent an item. That makes the review narrower than some. It also means it can't confidently tell you to pack something that doesn't exist.

Moving a list over

1. Start a trip list — no account needed for this step — or create a free account if you'd rather. Either way you then get an import screen: paste your LighterPack share link (lighterpack.com/r/<code>) into it, with no export step needed. If you'd rather export CSV from LighterPack (or any spreadsheet) and upload the file directly, that works too.
2. Import into your gear garage, so the items are reusable, or straight into a single trip.
3. Check the category mapping on the import screen, then adjust weights and the base / worn / consumable classification.

Import is free and there's no item limit. Nothing about it is reserved for a paid tier, because there isn't one.

Common questions

Is GearGopher free?

Yes, with no paid tier and no feature gating: unlimited gear, unlimited trips, import, export and public sharing included. There are no ads on the site today.

Can I import my LighterPack list?

Yes — paste your LighterPack share link directly, or export CSV and upload it, into either your garage or a single trip. Free, no item cap.

Can I get my data back out?

Yes. Export your gear garage or any single trip to CSV whenever you want, free — the same format you can import, so it re-reads cleanly here or in a spreadsheet. There's also a print-formatted version of any trip with tick boxes, which your browser can save as a PDF if you'd rather carry it on paper.

Do I need an account?

No. You can start a trip list and add gear to it without signing up, and reading public trip lists never needs an account either. The catch is that an unclaimed list is tied to the browser you built it in — clear your cookies or switch devices and it's gone. Creating an account at any point keeps the list you've already built, exactly as it is, and makes it reachable from anywhere.

Will my lists be public?

Only if you publish them. Your gear garage is always private, and trips are private by default. You can share a trip via an unlisted link that search engines don't index, or publish it as a public page.

Is there a mobile app?

No. Neither tool has one; both are web apps that work in a phone browser.
